Everyone is born with a small amount of breast tissue in their body. Breast tissue consisting of milk-producing glands (lobules), ducts that carry milk to the nipple and fat. Women began to develop more breast tissue during puberty, while men do not. Because we are all born with a small amount of breast tissue, all people have a risk for developing breast cancer.

Types of breast cancer are diagnosed in men include:

1. Cancer that starts in the the milk ducts. Ductal carcinoma is the the most common type of of male breast cancer. Almost all types of male breast cancer starts in the milk ducts.

2. Cancer that begins in the milk-producing glands. Lobular carcinoma rarely occurs in men because men have some lobules in their breast tissue.

Inherit genes that increase the risk of breast cancer

Some men inherit the mutated gene from their parents that increase the risk of breast cancer. Mutation of one of these genes, particularly a gene called BRCA2, puts men at greater risk of developing breast and prostate cancer. Normal function of this gene is to help prevent cancer by making proteins that keep cells from growing abnormally. But if they are mutated, these genes will not be effective to protect the body from cancer.
